4. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

        The Records of the education department consist of G.O’s printed proceedings and printed indices.  The subjects are covered from 1936 and include Elementary Education, Grants, Training Schools, Reorganisation of examinations, Secondary and College Education, acquisition of premises and land for the purpose of setting up  Schools, Physical Education, Schools and Colleges, University Affairs, Archaeology, Ancient Monuments etc. Prior to 1936 the Department was part of the Ecclesiastical Department which was constituted  in the year 1818 in erstwhile Madras Presidency.
