Archival Legislation

The Department is vigorously pursuing with Government of Andhra Pradesh for an Archival enactment for effective management, administration and Preservation of public records in the state. The Government of India has already enacted The Public Records Act 1993.

Access to Records

Access to consult the records is open to all bonafide research scholars. Permission to consult the records is accorded on request with a letter of recommendation from their University or the Department. Foreign scholars are required to produce a letter of accreditation from the diplomatic representatives of their country in India. Records which are more than 30 years old are made available to the scholars in the Research room specially provided.

The other schemes under active persuasion are Computerization of Records for easy access and consultation by the scholars, preparation of Finding Aids to serve as reference media, Training Programmes for updating the skills of the Archives personnel, continuation of Oral History and Video Recording of Vedas which are very useful for Research Scholars. Celebration of Archives Week annually to create Archival awareness among the public in general and students and academic commities in particular.

A careful search in to the huge mass of record wealth in Archives covers subjects and items like social manners of the people and rulers of different periods, administrative arrangements and setup, its division, revenue and expenditure, coins and their exchange values, prices of commodities, weights and measure, administration of law and justice, area of land available, extent of cultivable and fallow lands, tanks, rivers, areas of  irrigation, village administration hierarchy, census of population, flora, fauna, Trade and Commerce and so on.

The Andhra Pradesh State Archives and Research Institute is planning to introduce the Departmental website. Research scholars and  interested academicians all over the world are eagerly awaiting for a good day to come to consult and download the required original from the Archival holdings preserved in the A. P. State Archives from the Departmental website.
